Get set to commemorate VE Day

Published Wednesday, 6 May 2020

On Friday 8 May 2020 Britain will be commemorating the 75th anniversary of VE Day when the guns fell silent at the end of war in Europe.

Sadly due to Coronavirus, VE Day 75 events and street parties have had to be cancelled or postponed but you can still mark the occasion by joining in with friends and family, even if remotely.

Our Mayor, Cllr Mary Foryzewski has shared her thoughts on the day and suggested how you can take part. You can view here

On Friday 8 May, you can join Guildford Cathedral in the Big Picnic For Hope which encourages people to have their own picnics at home and link up with families and friends either virtually or by telephone and share their event.

Whilst on Sunday 10 May, there will be a live recording of Morning Prayer with a commemoration of VE Day broadcast from Guildford Cathedral. The link to both the Order of Service and the YouTube link will be available here

You will also be able to enjoy a rendition of Eric Coates 'Dambusters March' performed by a Waverley family of musicans.  The piece has a special resonance with the family, one of whose relatives - Flight Officer Joe Dacey, DFC DFM.- was one of the Dam Busters in 617 squadron. You can listen here.

Maybe you will grab paper, cereal boxes, string and other household items and make some of your own Great British Bunting using the BBC's easy to use templates and share your pics on social media.

Or for other ideas on how to get involved, you can go to the official VE Day website or Surrey Matters.

If you have pictures of your day that you'd like to share, please send your photographs to or why not share on our social media channels Twitter Facebook or Instagram
