November 2018 autumn statement business rates reliefs

The Government outlined a number of proposals to help small businesses from 2019/2020 onwards:

High Streets

The Government intends to help town centres and High Streets evolve by cutting business rate bills by one-third for retail properties (including shops, cafes and restaurants) with a rateable value below £51,000, benefitting up to 90% of retail premises, for two years from April 2019. This is subject to state aid limits.

The final details of the scheme have not been published and it is not yet clear whether Waverley will need to send application forms.

Public lavatories

The Government will introduce 100% rate relief for all public lavatories from 2020/2021.

Local newspaper discount

The existing £1,500 discount for office space occupied by a local newspaper will continue for 2019/2020.

Self catering and holiday let accommodation

The Government will consult on the criteria under which self-catering and holiday lets become liable to business rates rather than council tax to reduce fraud.
