Project background
The golf course at Broadwater Park closed in December 2018. It was built on a former landfill site, and in recent years, it has become apparent that the current cap for containing the landfill is not working as it should be, and that significant work will need to be completed to enable the area to continue being used for public leisure and recreation.
We engaged with the local community a while ago about what residents would like to see in the area, and on the wish list was a quiet green space, allowing for biodiversity increase, a place to have coffee and socialise as well as a vibrant space for fun activities and exercising.
We are planning to respond to that and, in conjunction with local users and community groups, we want to create a new community oasis for people of all ages to enjoy. No firm plans are set just yet as we work on the next stage of the project.
Firstly, we need to continue to maintain the site safety as some waste has started coming up to the surface. You may also have noticed that some site clearance work has begun, now that the bird nesting season is over, so that we can understand the extent of the landfill and progress forward with designs as soon as a clear picture is established.
It’ll be a long and complex process - but also necessary to establish a new revitalised area. Due to the complexity of the landfill, our current estimate is that this part of Broadwater Park will reopen in 2029.
We are looking forward to sharing initial designs that reflect the early feedback from the community, once they’ve been drafted, and we will complete another round of community engagement in due course.
