Consent to alter

Leaseholders and homes that are now owned privately but were previously owned by Waverley will be subject to restrictive covenants in the deed to your property.

It is likely you will need to gain consent for:

  • keeping a pet
  • renting out your flat
  • any alterations to your property including (but not limited to)
    • replacing windows
    • knocking down internal walls
    • extensions
    • erecting a garden shed
    • fencing or installing / replacing a patio

Consent requests for alterations that require planning permission

You must get consent from the Homeownership team at Waverley even if a planning application has already been carried out or granted.

Request permission

Email the Homeownership Team with information on your application and include:

  • your full name
  • address the request relates to
  • specific details including any plans or images for alteration.

Also indicate that you accept the fee (detailed below) so we can raise an invoice for you and carry out your request promptly.

You will need to request retrospective consent to alter. This means you are asking for permission after you have already done something.

Asking for permission after you have done the work is risky because we may refuse your request and you will have to put the property back the way it was at your own cost.

If you then refuse to put the property back to the way it was, you may be in breach of your lease and we may take you to court.

Yes, the fees are below which are reviewed in April each year:

Category Fee
Consent to alter  £69.00
Retrospective consent to alter £95.30
Consent to sublet or keep a pet £39.40

Please be aware that payment of this fee does not guarantee consent will be granted.

For standard requests you should get a response within 25 working days following receipt of payment, but if it is more complex it may take longer.

Please email homeownership@waverley.gov.uk with your name, the address of the property your query relates to and specific details of the permission you want, including any planning information.
