Blackheath Common

Blackheath Common covers 250 acres of lowland heathland. It consists of dry lowland heathland, including acid grassland and woodland blocks, lying on Bargate and Folkstone beds of the Lower Greensand.

There is a significant area of lowland heathland, an internationally important habitat which has suffered considerable losses (over 85% in the last 200 years). 

Location and parking

Blackheath lies east of the B2128 and south of the A248.

Who manages Blackheath Common

The area around Blackheath village and to the south and east is leased and managed by Waverley Borough Council and is a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). The National Trust and Albury Estate manage parts of Blackheath Common to the north and east within the Guildford Borough Council area.

Blackheath Management Plan

As of 2015 the site also now has a 10 year management plan for Blackheath Common, which sets out a series of objectives to be achieved. The plan sets out how the common is to managed, for both wildlife and people, over the next ten years and includes provisions to install a silt trap uphill of the crossroads in Blackheath village to alleviate flooding problems during heavy rain. Consultation with local residents and the parish council was been a key component of the plans’ development and continued work throughout the management plan.
