Scrap metal dealer licence

All scrap metal dealers and motor salvage operators need to have a licence under the Scrap Metal Dealers Act 2013. Licences last for three years but can be renewed, varied or revoked. 

Types of licence

Site licence

You need to list all the sites where you operate as a scrap metal dealer and name a manager for each site. This allows you to transport scrap metal to and from these sites in any local authority area.

Fees

  • new - £551.80
  • renewal - £316.70
  • change to collector's licence - £480.70

Mobile collectors' licence 

This allows you to regularly collect scrap metal door-to-door within the boundaries of a single local authority. You will need a separate licence for each local authority where you operate.

Fees

  • new - £504.80
  • renewal - £269.70
  • change to site licence - £551.80

You can only hold one type of licence in any one local authority area.
