Environmental permits

We regulate certain types of factory processes and other activities such as dry cleaners. This is to reduce any pollution they may cause and to help improve air quality.

Businesses operating these premises must have a permit and these are renewable periodically.

Which processes need a permit?

these are examples of processes that need a permit:

  • Combustion processes - waste oil burners
  • Incinerators - crematoria and waste incineration
  • Timber processes - timber manufacture and treatment
  • Mineral processes - cement plant and mineral screening, grading and crushing
  • Animal and plant treatment processes - animal feed manufacture, pet food, composting
  • Solvent and oil recovery processes - petrol stations and dry cleaners
  • Coating processes - printing, vehicle re-spraying.

See Environmental permits: details information on gov.uk for a full list.

Large installations - A1 processes

The Environment Agency control A1 activities, which are the larger more polluting and complex industries eg  power stations. Contact the Environment Agency.

Small and medium sized processes - A2 and Part B processes

We regulate these activities in Waverley. These include waste oil burners, petrol filling stations and dry cleaners.
