WBC secures planning permission to redevelop former M&Co premises on Godalming High Street

Waverley Borough Council’s plans to breathe new life into a retail unit at 69 High Street, Godalming, were given the go-ahead last night as councillors approved planning permission for alterations to the building.

The Borough Council Planning Committee met on Wednesday 21 August and approved plans for partial demolition to the rear of the building, and for the refurbishment of a new commercial unit, leaving the rear of the building clear and ready for Waverley built and managed social and affordable housing.

The unit at 69 High Street has been vacant since M&Co closed, causing residents much concern. Waverley Borough Council stepped in to purchase the prominent town centre location to drive forward redevelopment, attract new investment, and build much needed homes.

The council worked up plans for a mixed-use development that would bring this empty site back into use for the benefit of the local community. A restaurant to the front of the building will bring more people to the town centre, boost the economy and create new jobs. The accommodation to the rear will provide much-needed environmentally friendly, affordable housing in a central location that's close to local services.

This recently approved planning application covers alterations to the existing building, and the installation of air source heat pumps, PV solar panels and ventilation and extractor systems, to create a viable space for the new two-storey restaurant. A new planning application for council retained affordable housing at the rear of the site will be submitted in due course.

Cllr. Paul Follows, Leader of Waverley Borough Council and Councillor for Godalming Central and Ockford, said:

“The first phase of this project was to secure a high-quality tenant that could increase footfall on the high street, add to the local economy and provide employment opportunities. I’m pleased to say that our contract with Loungers PLC has done just that, and we now have the planning permission to create a fantastic commercial restaurant.

“Our officers are now busy working on the project’s next phase, which is to develop plans for up to ten new affordable homes in the space behind the retail unit. These new living spaces will be high-quality, energy-efficient and designed sympathetically to the surrounding area. This mixed-use site is an exciting opportunity to regenerate and draw further investment to our town, providing a place for work, leisure and living, right in the heart of Godalming.”
