Waverley raises the flag for Merchant Navy Day

The Mayor of Waverley, Cllr John Ward, led tributes to the work and service of the Merchant Navy at the Burys, Godalming, today. The event was attended by staff and councillors, including the Leader of Waverley Borough Council, Cllr Paul Follows, The Mayor of Farnham, Cllr Alan Earwaker, Cranleigh Parish Council Vice Chairman, Nigel Sanctuary and Duncan Bain from The Seafarers’ Charity, who was invited to raise the flag with Cllr Ward ahead of Merchant Navy Day on the 3 September.

The Merchant Navy flag has been raised in recognition to the brave men and women of the Merchant Navy. These are people who serve in commercial shipping - from cruise ships to tankers and to cargo ships of all description - in both war and peacetime.

Mayor Ward in his speech addressing the crowd said: “The huge difficulties encountered by the Merchant Navy to keep Britain supplied, especially with foodstuffs during the World Wars must never be forgotten. In particular, the Atlantic Convoys served as a crucial lifeline for the nation and this dependence continues today as our country looks more to eastern markets for its overseas trading.

“The flag raised today serves as a reminder of their sacrifices during unprecedented times and acts as a symbol of the unwavering spirit of our Merchant Navy to keep Britain safe no matter the cost.”

The flag will continue to fly until Merchant Navy Day on 3 September.
