Waverley Borough Council raises Jubilee flag

On Wednesday 1 June, Waverley Borough Council members and staff gathered to raise the Jubilee flag in honour of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.

The ceremony comes ahead of the four-day bank holiday weekend between 2 and 5 June, during which residents across the borough have organised over 70 street parties and parades.

The celebrations, organised by a mixture of local residents, community groups and town and parish councils, include community lunches and barbeques, as well as live music, games and activities for people of all ages. A full list of activities can be found on the Waverley Borough Council website. Due to the festivities, there are a number of Planned Road Closures during this period.

The raising of the flag was held at Waverley Borough Council’s office at The Burys in Godalming and was attended by the Mayor of Waverley, Councillor John Ward during which he delivered a speech reflecting on the Queen’s seventy years as the head of state.

On the event, the Mayor said, “I am delighted to have taken part in this ceremony to celebrate this momentous milestone for Her Majesty the Queen. There are numerous planned events and street parties organised by members of our community to celebrate this joyous occasion, and the anticipation and excitement for the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee is apparent on the streets of Waverley and throughout the country.

He added, “I believe these events are a testament to how important her reign as the Head of State and Head of the Commonwealth has been. “

“This celebration is an opportunity for our community to come together, and I am happy to hear of the enthusiasm for this occasion and look forward to participating in the festivities myself.”
