Stay one step ahead with walking football at The Edge

If you miss the social side of team sports and are looking to take a first step towards a healthier lifestyle then walking football at The Edge Leisure Centre in Haslemere could be just what you need.

Dynamo Haslemere Walkers Football Club, backed by Waverley Borough Council, play walking football at The Edge from 6pm until 7pm on Wednesdays and Fridays, and they are looking for new players to join the game.

Walking football is a slower version of the beautiful game, and as the name suggests, no running is allowed. The game is non-contact, the ball must be kept below head height, and all free kicks are indirect.

Games at the Edge are £7 per session, and everyone is welcome to take part.

Albert Hall from Dynamo Haslemere Walkers FC said:

“Walking football’s a great way for us to stay active and keep playing the game we love as we get older. We may walk the pitch, but we run the game.

“A lot of our players used to miss the banter that comes with being part of a team, but we have that again now through walking football. We’ve got a WhatsApp group where we can share jokes and stay in touch away from the game, and we often go out for meals together.

“We are a supportive group, and it’s great to be able to open up about what’s going on in our lives away from the football. We’ve had players with serious health conditions who have shared their news with the group and found other teammates are going through the same thing. It’s positive for our mental wellbeing to have people we can talk to if we have a problem.”

Councillor Kika Mirylees, Waverley Borough Council Portfolio Holder for Community Services, Leisure and EDI said:

“Walking football is a fantastic way to improve your fitness and stay healthy. Don’t be fooled by the slower pace of play, walking football will still make you sweat.

“Playing regularly can help to lower blood pressure, burn fat, build muscle and improve your mobility. However, the slower pace of the game and reduced contact means there is less risk of pain, discomfort or injury.

“If you love the beautiful game, walking football is a safe way to start playing once again. Even if you’ve never considered playing football before, it’s an accessible way to give the sport a try.”
