Marking the one-year anniversary of the invasion of Ukraine

Ahead of the national one minute silence tomorrow (Friday 24 February) to mark the one-year anniversary of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Cllr John Ward, the Mayor of Waverley, issued the following statement:

"As we reach the first-year anniversary of this conflict, we continue to stand in solidarity with the brave people of Ukraine.

"It has been shocking and painful to see the devastation that the last year has wrought on the country and the thousands of people that have been affected. Our thoughts and prayers are with them, along with all those here in Waverley who have family and friends in Ukraine.

"We have supported 650 Ukrainian guests to settle  in Waverley and I would like to take the opportunity to extend our thanks to those in the borough who have opened their homes; they are a shining example of community spirit.

"As a council and a community, we will continue to support our Ukrainian friends through this terrible time and hope that there will soon be an end to the fighting and suffering.

"Like many others across the country, our staff and councillors will be joining in a minute’s silence tomorrow and I would welcome people in the borough, to take the time, if they can, to also stop and take a moment to reflect at 11am.”
