Home Energy Improvement Guide launched to help residents save energy

Waverley residents looking to upgrade their homes with energy saving ‘retrofit’ measures can now access guidance from Surrey County Council’s new Home Energy Improvement Guide.

Over 300,000 homes in Surrey have low energy performance, meaning people live in homes which are poorly insulated, expensive to run, and prone to damp or mould due to inadequate internal air quality. To encourage energy saving measures, Surrey County Council has created the Home Energy Improvement Guide as a comprehensive and user-friendly resource to help residents on their journey to a more affordable, comfortable and healthy home.

The Guide provides detailed and practical advice on retrofit measures for three common Surrey house types, and how to arrange for their installation. These range from simple cost-effective upgrades like draught proofing, to full-scale retrofits including solar and heat pump systems. Residents can focus on the sections relevant to their house type, or the measures and initiatives that interest them most. Information is also included on what funding and support Surrey County Council and other organisations can provide.

Installing energy saving measures can provide a range of benefits including:

  • Improving the thermal comfort of homes and reducing health issues associated with damp and mould.

  • Lowering energy bills.

  • Making homes more modern, resilient and future-proofed.

  • Reducing carbon emissions from the residential energy sector.

Councillor Steve Williams, Waverley Borough Council’s Portfolio Holder for Environment and Sustainability, said: “I’d urge residents to read through Surrey County Council’s new Home Energy Improvement Guide if they haven’t already. This is a free resource providing much needed advice and information on how to upgrade your home and improve its energy efficiency. By saving energy at home, we can all reduce both energy bills and carbon emissions. The Home Energy Improvement Guide is an invaluable resource in making energy saving improvements to your home."
