Get on your bike! New bike shelters support council’s zero-carbon commitment in Waverley

As part of the council’s drive to promote active travel, reduce carbon emissions and improve air quality, Waverley Borough Council has been working with Parish and Town councils as well as representatives from Godalming, Farnham, Waverley Cycle Forums and Haslemere Vision to provide new bike shelters in council-owned car parks across the borough.

The bike shelter project will take place in two phases with the first bike shelter hardstanding being installed in Village Way, Cranleigh on Tuesday 3 May with the bike shelter being installed in June. It will replace the bring bank which has been removed now that the council’s new, free Textile and Small Electrical service has been launched to Waverley residents. Further details on the collection service, which collects resident’s unwanted items, can be found at Textile and Small Electrical web page.  There will a small number of car park spaces unavailable for the week whilst work is carried out.

Councillor Steve Williams, Portfolio Holder for Environment and Sustainability, said:

“This is great news for Waverley residents and, ultimately, for the environment.  As a council working towards becoming carbon-neutral by 2030, one of our goals is to encourage active travel and if this pilot scheme is successful, we will be rolling out other bike shelters across the borough.  The locations have been chosen for resident’s convenience and we hope that new shelters will encourage those who want to cycle more, whether that be popping to the shops, work or simply for a fun day out.

“Not only does cycling save money, which is even more important in these difficult times,  but it also helps reduce air pollution too. We do hope that residents will make good use of them.”

The new bike shelters are dry and sheltered and will be deliberately sited in convenient locations across the borough including one at Haslemere High Street car park and two at Crown Court car park, Godalming.  Car park spaces will be reduced by just three at both car parks.
