Flag raised at The Burys to celebrate Pride Month

The Pride flag will fly outside Waverley Borough Council’s headquarters throughout June, in recognition of Pride Month. The Mayor of Waverley, Councillor Penny Rivers, was joined by councillors and officers at a flag raising ceremony on 1 June, held to kick off Pride Month.

Pride Month is celebrated globally and is an opportunity to honour the achievements and struggles of the LGBTQ+ community. It is a time to acknowledge the rich diversity within our society and affirm our commitment to building a more inclusive and accepting community for all, as well as raising awareness about the ongoing fight for LGBTQ+ rights and equality.

Councillor Rivers said: “Pride Month is a powerful reminder of the importance of love, respect, and equality for all individuals, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity. It is a time to acknowledge the incredible contributions and talents of the LGBTQ+ community in every aspect of human endeavour.

“However, let us also remember that our work is far from over. Pride Month is not just a celebration; it is a call to action. It is a reminder that we must continue to challenge all forms of discrimination, prejudice, and hate. We must strive for a society that values and respects the rights and dignity of every individual, regardless of their sexual orientation, gender identity or any other characteristic.

“Pride Month teaches us that diversity is not a threat; it is a strength. It is through embracing our differences that we can truly build a better and more compassionate world. Let us stand together as allies, supporting and uplifting each other, and amplifying the voices of those who are marginalised and silenced.”
