When Lynn Smith-White from Elstead posted on the village Facebook page about starting a foodbank to help those who had been financially impacted by Covid-19, little did she realise just how many people it would end up helping,
The Elstead Foodbank, which is supported by Lynn and another eight volunteers, currently sees 60-65 people per week come through its doors for, not only essentials such as fresh food but also children’s clothing, quilts, bed linen and more.
Lynn said: “I saw that Covid was having a direct impact on many villagers and wanted to do something to help. We do a shop of around £130 each week and buy meat, fresh fruit and vegetables and then everything else is donated though other village residents who have either set up standing orders or drop items off at one of the drop off points in and around the village. We often end up inundated with donations.”
Not only does the group see a lot of local donations but they were also chosen as one of the community groups to receive funding from Waverley Borough Council, as part of the money being given to local authorities in England to allocate to organisations working in the heart of the community.
“We were absolutely thrilled to get this extra support from Waverley. The £1000 will help buy quite a few more trolleys of essentials, especially in the lead up to Christmas! This is the time of year when many people struggle most, Thanks to donations from some wonderful, local people, The Foodbank is going to be able to provide a turkey and all the trimmings for those really in need, as well as family hampers and even stockings for the children.
“This has been a very difficult year for many but one of the positives to come out of it all, is how many people have taken a step back, looked at all they have and made a conscious decision to help others.”
