Boost for sports stars of the future

Dreaming of becoming the next tennis star like Emma Raducanu or double Olympic champion Adam Peaty? If so, Waverley Borough Council in partnership with David Lloyd Clubs, Farnham are giving away 15 free annual memberships to future sporting stars during 2022.

The scheme, established to help those gifted in their particular sports by offering discounted access to a variety of services is accepting applications for 2022-23.

Talented athletes, who meet the scheme’s criteria, can use the David Lloyd Club in Farnham free of charge. The club boasts a terrific range of sports and leisure facilities, including eight premium tennis courts, two beautiful pools and modern gym equipment.

Many sporting stars have benefited already from the scheme, such as local athlete Leo Maliphant.

Leo said: “Having the use of David Lloyd over the past couple of years has been invaluable. COVID restrictions and cancellations have made training and competing more difficult than usual but being able to be flexible and train earlier and later at David Lloyd has allowed me to maintain and still improve my fitness. I have hit new personal bests over 10k and marathon, completed the London classics and managed to qualify for the 2022 world duathlon and triathlon championships which is more than I could have hoped for.”

Councillor Liz Townsend, Portfolio Holder for Economic Development, Parks and Leisure, said: “We have many talented sports people in Waverley with huge potential to get to the top of their chosen sport.

Our aim is to give them a helping hand to realise their potential and achieve their individual aims and aspirations.”

Kelvin Mills, Head of Commercial Services at Waverley Borough Council,  said:  “Along with our partners in this initiative, we want to encourage our young sportsmen and women to be all they can be and with the free use of these facilities, our aspiring athletes have a great opportunity to develop and improve in their chosen sport.”

Applicants need to be at least 10 years old and be able to demonstrate their sporting skills. Applications close on 7 November 2021. To apply and find out more visit the webpage.
