One of Waverley’s much-used playgrounds has been given a makeover in good time for the popular Bourne Show that takes place in July, thanks to donations from last year’s event, and funding via a Your Fund Surrey grant.
The project, which received a grant of £6,500, was carried out last year in partnership with Surrey County Council (Your Fund Surrey- Small Community Projects) and Waverley Borough Council who organised the works. These included:
- Enhancements to the sandpit
- Installation of an additional picnic bench
- Fence repairs
- Replacement of matting across much of the site
Councillor Steve Williams, Waverley Borough Council Portfolio Holder for Environment and Sustainability, said:
“We are delighted to have improved the playground in Bourne Green. This project underscores our commitment to providing safe and enjoyable spaces for families and children in our community. The improvements made will ensure that the playground continues to be a cherished spot for recreation, and we hope families will enjoy the enhanced play area.”
Surrey County and Farnham Town Councillor Michaela Martin, who supported the grant application, expressed her delight: “Surrey County Council is thrilled to collaborate with the Bourne community to support the remedial works to the children’s playground in Bourne Green. This funding will enhance access to the playground, providing enjoyment for young families in the area.”
Roger Goscomb, Bourne Show Chairman & Treasurer, highlighted the importance of the playground: “The Bourne Green and its playground are at the heart of the Bourne. The playground is heavily used, especially with South Farnham Infants School nearby. Many toddlers and their parents use the facility during the week, and on weekends, it is often filled with families enjoying the fresh air and the stimulation that a playground brings. We are extremely grateful to both Michaela for Surrey and Andy Fernandez for Waverley for their hard work and support in bringing this project to fruition. Our thanks also go to all the volunteers, sponsors, and Show visitors who enable us to make a surplus of funds each year, allowing us to continue making donations to the local community and making a difference in people’s lives.”
