Apply now for Community Infrastructure Levy funding

Waverley Borough Council is inviting organisations that intend to deliver infrastructure improvements in the borough to bid for financial support from the Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL).

The Community Infrastructure Levy is a planning charge that councils can apply to new developments, ensuring they contribute towards the improvement of local infrastructure and support growth in the local community. The CIL money from new developments is allocated by the council to local infrastructure providers, helping to support projects that improve Waverley.

Each year, Waverley Borough Council accepts bids for funding from organisations that are working on strategic infrastructure improvements to support development that will benefit residents and businesses. The levy can be used to support a wide range of projects including upgrades to the road network, building health centres or leisure centres, expanding schools or improving parks and sports facilities.

Last year Waverley Borough Council approved over £7 million of Strategic CIL. Successful past bids include new 3G playing pitches at Glebelands, Rodborough and Woolmer Hill Schools, improvements to the Water Lane roundabout, and a new GP Surgery and Pharmacy in Farnham.

The 2024/25 Strategic CIL bidding round is now open and will close on 25 October 2024.

Councillor Mark Merryweather, Waverley Borough Council Portfolio Holder for Finance, Assets and Property, and Chair of the CIL Executive Working Group said:

“In most cases, when new housing development takes place, the developer has to make a financial contribution towards the improvement of local infrastructure. This Community Infrastructure Levy is intended to help offset the impact of their developments.

“Our annual CIL bidding round is the time to allocate those financial contributions made by developers to support strategic infrastructure projects that improve our quality of life, make our borough more attractive and support our sustainable economic growth.

“If you are part of an organisation that is looking deliver strategic infrastructure improvements within Waverley then please go online, check the requirements and submit your bid for funding support now.”

Waverley Borough Council is responsible for making the final decision on the allocation of Strategic CIL funds. Bids must be made using the application form at www.waverley.gov.uk/CILBids and be accompanied by relevant supporting material.  Decisions on bids will be made after the closure of the bidding round.

For further information, see www.waverley.gov.uk/CILBids. Groups interested in preparing proposals but unsure about any aspect are welcome to contact the CIL Team by emailing CIL@waverley.gov.uk.
