Before you can vote in UK elections or referendums you need to register to vote. Your name and address will then appear on the electoral register.
You only need to register once. If your circumstances don't change, you don't need to register separately for every election. You must register again of you've changed address, name or nationality.
Two types of Electoral Register
We are required by law to publish two electoral registers - the Full Register and the Open (Edited) Register.
Everyone is added to the Full Register and this is only used for voting purposes and for credit references purposes, as defined by law. This register is restricted and is not available for public inspection. The Open Register is an extract of the full register that is open for public inspection and can be sold to third parties, if it's requested. You can opt out from appearing on this register.
Being on the electoral register can make it easier to get a loan, mortgage, finance agreement, or even a mobile phone contract.
Viewing the Electoral Register
The Open Register is held on reception at the Council Offices in Godalming and can be viewed at any time, during office hours.
The Full Register is kept by the Electoral Services Team at the Council Offices in Godalming. To view this register, you must make a 15 minute appointment with us. Appointments are supervised by a member of staff and only handwritten notes are permitted.
There is a statutory timetable that governs the addition and removal of people, and of the publication of the electoral register. The timetable for 2018/19 is below:
